How we get the numbers.
Every hobby on this site is described with the same six numbers, so that any two can be compared fairly. This page says exactly what each one means and where it comes from.
The six numbers
The whole starter kit added up: every item listed on the page, at a typical US price for an entry-level version. It is always the sum of the kit list, never a separate estimate.
What it costs to keep going once you have the kit: materials, feed, fees, replacements. A typical figure for a beginner, not a ceiling.
What has to live in your home. A chair means it packs into a drawer; a desk means a corner that stays set up; a room means it does not pack away; outdoors means the hobby happens somewhere else.
Quiet, low, medium or loud, judged by what a neighbor through a shared wall would hear.
What ends up on the floor or the table, and whether it sweeps up.
How long until a beginner has a finished thing, or a real first outing, to show for it. Not how long it takes to get good.
Where the prices come from
Every figure is a typical US price for an entry-level but usable version of the item, rounded. We leave out sale prices, professional gear and the cheapest option when its reviews say it does not last.
Each kit is then checked item by item against current listings from US retailers, usually at more than one shop. Where the listings differ we take the middle. A page that has been through that check prints the month under its kit. A page with no month yet still carries our first estimate.
Prices move, shops differ and taxes vary by state, so treat every figure as a planning number and check before you buy.
What we do not claim
- We do not claim to have practiced every hobby on the site. Pages are researched from makers, retailers, clubs, official guidance and long-standing reference works, and written to be checked.
- We do not rank hobbies as better or worse. A hobby either fits your budget, your room and your evenings, or it does not.
- We do not give medical, legal or veterinary advice. Where a hobby involves sharp tools, animals, licenses or local rules, the page says so and points to the official source.
Corrections
If a number is wrong or out of date, we want to fix it. A page is updated as soon as an error is confirmed, and the month of its price check is printed under the kit once that check is done.
