Dried flower wreaths, summer, kept for winter.
Grow or gather, hang to dry, wire into a ring. An afternoon craft that keeps color on the door all winter.
What it is like
A dried wreath is an arrangement that does not need water. Flowers that hold their shape and color when dried, strawflower, statice, lavender and many grasses, are wired in overlapping bundles around a ring.
It is forgiving and quick. The technique is one repeated move, and the result depends mostly on the mix of textures you choose. Growing your own everlastings turns it into a two-season hobby.

Your first project: a ten-inch door wreath
Small mixed bunches of five to seven stems, each cut to about a hand length.
Three tight turns of wire around the stems and the base.
Lay the next bundle so its heads hide the last stems, and keep going in one direction.
Tuck the final bundle under the heads of the first, wire it and make a hanging loop at the back.
Why people quit
- Flowers that crumbleDried too long or in sun. Dry bunches upside down in a dark, airy place and work them slightly humid.
- Bald patchesBundles too small or spaced too far. Overlap more than feels necessary.
- Fading by springNormal. Keep it out of direct sun and treat it as a seasonal thing.
