What it is like

Male deer, elk and moose grow a new set of antlers every year and drop the old ones in late winter. Shed hunting is simply walking the places they spend the winter and looking for what fell off.

It costs nothing and it changes how you see a landscape. You learn where animals feed, bed and cross, and a walk with nothing found is still a long spring walk.

Your first project: a first antler

Step 1 Check the rules

Seasons, closures and land access for your state and the exact piece of ground.

Step 2 Wait for the drop

Most deer shed between January and April. Go too early and you push animals when they are weakest.

Step 3 Walk where deer winter

South-facing slopes, bedding cover, field edges and fence crossings.

Step 4 Look for parts, not antlers

A tine tip or a curve of white in the grass. Walk slowly and look close.

Before you start

Rules differ by state and by land. Several western states close public land to shed collecting in late winter, national parks prohibit removing antlers at any time, and private land needs the owner's permission. Check your state wildlife agency before you go, and keep your distance from wintering animals.

Why people quit

  • Walking too fastAntlers hide in plain sight. Halve your speed.
  • Going where there are no deerFind winter food and bedding first.
  • Empty first walksNormal. Most people find nothing for a few outings, then cannot stop seeing them.
